Connecting innovation, talent and opportunity across the South

The past few months have taken me across the South of England and beyond, meeting employers, educators and industry leaders who are all playing their part in strengthening the future of engineering and manufacturing. 

Whether at global sporting events, skills competitions or regional networking groups, one message has stood out: collaboration is essential if we are to close the skills gap.

Showcasing opportunities through motorsport

With the British Grand Prix taking place at Silverstone, there were fantastic opportunities to engage with the motorsport community and its extensive supply chain. 

I was delighted to speak on a panel at the STEM on Track Finals, discussing the exciting careers available across motorsport and engineering. Alongside this, I had the opportunity to connect with teams from both Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team and Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team. It was inspiring to hear how innovation, collaboration and highly skilled people remain at the heart of one of the UK's most recognised engineering success stories.

Strengthening links between employers and education

Away from the racetrack, I was also pleased to attend the launch of the Careers & Enterprise Company's London Hub at The Shard. 

Enginuity supported the development of a new resource aimed at helping SMEs understand the value of engaging with education through initiatives such as modern work experience. For many smaller businesses, knowing where to start can be a barrier, so creating practical guidance that demonstrates the benefits for both employers and young people is an important step towards building stronger talent pipelines.

Exploring emerging technologies

Across the South West, I had the opportunity to connect with the Hydrogen South West network and visit the nLighten data centre in Bristol. 

It was exciting to hear how SMEs are already embracing emerging technologies and positioning themselves within fast-growing sectors such as hydrogen and digital infrastructure. These conversations highlighted the opportunities available across the region and reinforced the role we can play in helping our network understand, access and benefit from new technologies and future skills.

Looking ahead

Looking back over the past few months, what stands out most is the breadth of innovation taking place across the South. 

From Formula One to hydrogen technologies and from world-class skills competitions to employer engagement with education, there is no shortage of ambition or opportunity. By continuing to connect businesses, inspire future talent and champion practical skills solutions, we are helping move closer to our shared mission of closing the skills gap in engineering and manufacturing.
