Enginuity’s CEO Ann Watson MBE attended CECE Congress 2026 with industry leaders to discuss how we can inspire the next generation with creativity, engineering careers and opportunities.
CECE Congress brought together leadership, policy makers and innovators from across the industry to discuss the role of creativity, technology and people in shaping the future for construction and mining equipment on 27-29 October.
Inspiring young voices
Ann chaired a panel looking at how young people see innovation, creativity and career opportunities in a fast-moving world. Panellists included Oliver Garnham, a recent degree apprentice graduate and Sales Specialist at JCB, Diana Novikova, Project Officer at sustAIn.brussels, and Ole Thomas, Apprentice Mechatronics Technician specialising in agricultural and construction machinery at Kiesel Group.
The session centred around young voices and gave delegates an insight into how young people see the industry. Panellists were able to give a range of experiences around how they have entered the industry and how they have innovated throughout their learning.
Turning inspiration into opportunity
During the discussion, Ann described Enginuity’s work through three Cs: Cheerleading for engineering and manufacturing, Championing the needs of SMEs and Collaborating with employers, educators and partners to turn ideas into practical support.
Through initiatives such as the Girls Can Engineer storybook, The Invention Shed at Gulliver’s Valley, and Women in Engineering Scholarships, young people are able to engage with engineering in a variety of ways and overcome barriers.
Speaking at the event, Ann said: “Engineering and manufacturing are full of opportunities to be creative, solve problems and make a difference. We want more young people to see those possibilities and feel that there is a place for them in our sector.
“At Enginuity, we like to think differently about how we use our charitable resources. That means finding imaginative ways to spark an interest, alongside practical support and funding that help people take the next step.”
Ann also mentioned how Enginuity supports employers with our Future Skills Hub and strategic workforce planning programmes. The Policy Centre for Supply Chain and SMEs also support the sector to ensure SME voices are heard in skills policy.
Having young professionals involved in CECE Congress 2026 was a great opportunity to involve the next generation and connect with employers who are helping shape the future of engineering.
