Vocational Celebration Day brings the UK together to celebrate vocational talent

On 6 August, people across the UK came together to celebrate the people, skills and opportunities that keep our country moving. 

In a special event hosted by broadcaster Steph McGovern and streamed live from Teagle Machinery Ltd in Cornwall, the UK's first ever Vocational Celebration Day shone a spotlight on vocational learners, apprentices, educators and employers, celebrating the value of vocational routes and the people shaping the future of engineering, manufacturing and beyond. 

Created by Enginuity and EAL, Vocational Celebration Day was established to give vocational learning the recognition it deserves. Throughout the morning, viewers joined online while guests gathered on-site to celebrate achievements, hear inspiring stories and recognise the impact vocational skills have on individuals, businesses and the UK's economy. 

A celebration of vocational excellence 

The live broadcast opened in memorable fashion, with Steph McGovern arriving by a Linde P250 tow tractor before welcoming viewers from across the UK and introducing a programme packed with inspiring conversations, learner stories and messages of support from across industry and government. 

One of the day's most memorable moments saw vocational learners and apprentices receive a standing ovation as they made their way through the Vocational Celebration Day arch in a symbolic 'march of the heroes', recognising the dedication, ambition and achievements of those choosing vocational pathways. 

Throughout the broadcast, viewers heard directly from apprentices at different stages of their careers, alongside employers and industry leaders who shared how vocational learning is helping to build successful careers and strengthen the UK's workforce. 

The programme also featured live interviews with Apprenticeship Ambassadors from across the UK, showcasing the breadth of opportunities available through apprenticeships and the positive impact they have had on individuals, employers and local communities. 

Inspiring stories from across the UK 

From conversations with apprentices at Amazon to meeting young people working at Teagle Machinery, the broadcast highlighted the wide variety of careers that begin through vocational education. 

Guests from organisations including Rolls-Royce, Cornwall Careers Hub and the Apprenticeship Ambassador Network shared their experiences of supporting future talent, while special video messages from industry and government reinforced the growing recognition of vocational skills as a vital part of the UK's future prosperity. 

The event also brought moments of celebration and surprise, including performances from Adam Lyons and a flash dance that captured the positive, energetic spirit of the day. 

A shared commitment to vocational skills 

Vocational Celebration Day also demonstrated the strength of collaboration across education, industry and government. 

Throughout the broadcast, viewers heard messages from leaders, all united in recognising the importance of vocational learning and the opportunities it creates. Here is what they had to say: 

Host Steph McGovern said: “This is all about ensuring that young people have choice! Which means advice, opportunity and inspiration, to get rewarding careers – without saddling themselves with a mountain of debt in the process. Academics have had all the limelight for far too long.” 

Ann Watson MBE, CEO of Enginuity, added: “It's been fantastic to see over the last week, our Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, talking about how important these routes are and how important these vocational and technical routes into sectors and great careers are. And it's just as important to the academic routes. 

So it's fantastic and brilliant timing that today we are celebrating everything about vocational pathways and vocational qualifications.  But for everybody today, be it present or past, who's taken an apprenticeship or a vocational pathway into the sector. Congratulations. Be very proud of what you've achieved.” 

Alison Parkes, Managing Director of EAL, shared her excitment:  “I love my job, especially on days like today. Congratulations to everyone. It feels like this day has come at exactly the right time, especially given the recent announcements from the Prime Minister. Today is all about you, and you should be really proud.  

EAL is incredibly proud to have helped initiate Vocational Celebration Day alongside Enginuity. Vocational routes are not second best; they're essential and in high demand from employers across the country. For me, it's personal. My dad was a plumber, and I took a vocational pathway too, so you could say it's in my DNA. Have a brilliant day celebrating, and I look forward to many more Vocational Celebration Days to come.” 

Minister for Skills Baroness Jacqui Smith also had a message for attendees: "Students should be incredibly proud of their hard work and their achievements today, and I'm really grateful to teachers, employers and staff for everything they've done to support them.  

“Today, I want to celebrate the electricians, the engineers, the chefs, the coders, the carers and everyone who chose a vocational path. That takes skill, graft and pride. To everyone who's newly qualified, take a moment to feel proud of what you've achieved. You've gained skills the country needs, and that achievement deserves to be celebrated."

The success of the first Vocational Celebration Day was made possible by the learners, apprentices, educators, employers, partners, supporters and viewers who joined the celebration from across the UK. 

Whether tuning in online, sharing stories on social media, attending in person or championing vocational routes in their own organisations, everyone who took part helped make history by giving vocational learning the national celebration it deserves. 

Together, we celebrated not only the achievements of today, but the opportunities that vocational education creates for future generations.
