Small and medium‑sized engineering and manufacturing businesses play a vital role in the UK economy, but many tell us they face real challenges when it comes to navigating the apprenticeship and T Level landscape.

For many SMEs, understanding how apprenticeships work, how T Level industry placements can support workforce planning, and the level of UK Government funding available is not always clear. While most employers report that recruiting new talent through apprenticeships makes their business more competitive, accessing straightforward, reliable information can be difficult, particularly when time and resources are limited.

Colleges and training providers delivering apprenticeship and T Level programmes hold a wealth of expertise around skills development, recruitment, and funding. However, the challenge often lies in connecting SMEs with this knowledge in an accessible way.

Bridging the gap between SMEs and skills providers

That’s why Enginuity has been working closely with regional partners to strengthen links between employers and providers, ensuring engineering and manufacturing SMEs can quickly access the information they need to secure future talent and shape workforce development.

Supporting SMEs through practical employer events

A key example of this collaboration is Enginuity’s work with South Tyneside College on a dedicated employer engagement event designed specifically for engineering and manufacturing SMEs.

This targeted session will provide clear, practical insight into:

  • How apprenticeships can support workforce growth
  • How T Levels and industry placements work in practice
  • What funding is available and how SMEs can access it.

Designed with busy SMEs in mind, the event:

  • Lasts just one hour
  • Can be attended in person or remotely
  • Is open to organisations across the North East and nationally
  • Takes place as a breakfast event, starting at 8:30 AM on Friday, 8 May.

This flexible approach ensures employers can get the key information they need without taking significant time away from their day‑to‑day operations.

Continuing regional collaboration

Enginuity is also working with regional partners including Darlington College on future events to help companies engage with the talent they need while regional partners including Newcastle College also have employer engagement events to offer insights into apprenticeship recruitment coming up in May and June.
