Enginuity's Sector Engagement Manager, Fiona McGarry, shares her insights
My love for manufacturing began nearly twenty years ago when I first toured the Land Rover plant in Solihull. I was amazed by the process – watching a sheet of steel enter the press shop, and then three days later, seeing a finished luxury 4x4 vehicle rolling off the line in Trim and Final. That moment sparked an appreciation for the skills and innovation that go into manufacturing the products we encounter every day.
As we celebrate National Manufacturing Day this year, it’s important to reflect on the industry’s influence on our everyday lives, the diverse career opportunities it offers, and to encourage others to step into these environments.
Our daily connection with manufactured products
Manufacturing is at the heart of almost everything we use. Last week, I had the privilege of being a judge for The Manufacturer MX Awards, where I experienced my own ‘Inside the Factory’ moments. During this process, I visited companies like Encirc in Chester, who manufacturer glass bottles at their factory and then fill them with wine, spirits, beer and water. I also visited Britvic in Rugby, which is seeing an increase in soft drink production. I was amazed that this complex process of creating something as seemingly simple as a bottle or a can involves multiple stages, requiring the input of employees with a wide range of skills and expertise. I could have watched the cans of Pepsi and Tango go down the line all day!
The products we consume are perhaps easier to consider, but within each of those, there is a supply chain, involving various parts made in smaller factories. Manufacturing isn't limited to the final consumer product. It’s in every component, and every assembly process that contributes to the final outcome. I saw this first-hand when visiting EVTEC Automotive, a supplier to JLR. EVTECs remarkable workforce, where 43% of the employees have disabilities, proves that manufacturing not only touches all aspects of our lives but also embraces inclusivity and diversity in its workforce.
Exploring careers in manufacturing
On National Manufacturing Day, I’d also like to shine a light on the vast and varied career opportunities available in the industry. Despite the technological advancements that have transformed manufacturing over the past few decades, there’s still a persistent misconception that manufacturing jobs are limited to a busy and dusty factory floor. But nothing could be further from the truth. The reality is that the industry today is powered by cutting-edge technology, automation, and sophisticated processes, all of which demand a wide range of expertise.
The UK is the 12th largest manufacturing country in the world, contributing over 2.6 million jobs to the economy. This sector is not only key to our economic stability, but it’s also a hub of innovation, creativity, and diversity. Most jobs in modern manufacturing are driven by technology and problem-solving, making the industry far more dynamic than many realise. From creating energy solutions for million-pound yachts to developing components for electric vehicles, the range of opportunities is vast. Whether it’s luxury yachts or bath bombs, the UK’s manufacturing sector is brimming with exciting and varied career opportunities.
A future built on manufacturing
As we celebrate National Manufacturing Day 2024, I encourage you to join me in exploring these manufacturing companies. One of the most impactful ways to understand the depth and diversity of the manufacturing industry is by physically visiting these factories and seeing the process firsthand.
Whether a spiral staircase manufacturer like Spiral Construction Ltd in Cornwall, Henry Vacuum Cleaner in Chard, or Lush factory in Poole – there is something for everyone. The Enginuity charity team will be stepping out to visit a range of manufacturers throughout the day, and I can’t wait to hear about their experiences.
So, next time you enjoy a cold drink from a can or marvel at a luxury yacht, remember the incredible effort, expertise, and innovation that went into making it. If you’re talking to someone contemplating their future, ask them about their favourite products, and I bet there is somewhere in the UK that is making or making parts for that product.
By stepping into these environments, we not only gain a greater appreciation for manufacturing itself but also inspire the next generation to explore a future in this vibrant and essential sector.
