We’re marking today’s International Women in Engineering Day by sharing details of an exciting opportunity for young women who want to get into engineering and manufacturing – a sector where they can make real and lasting impact.

Enginuity, together with Teesside University, is running a residential in early July for female college students to get a taste of life at university, including a three-day programme of engineering workshops, activities, and guest speakers from within the sector.

The Discover Teesside Women in Engineering Residential (WiER) takes place from 1-3 July 2026 at Teesside University’s Middlesbrough campus, with a packed programme of events, workshops, and socials.

About the Women in Engineering Residential

According to the IET, only 17% of the workforce within the engineering and technology sectors are women – in other occupations that figure is 56%.

Engineering spans many different disciplines and skill sets. From aerospace to energy, there’s a lot to discover as young learners begin their journey towards a career in the sector – which itself would benefit from a broader mix of talent, ideas, and perspectives.

The Women in Engineering Residential offers prospective female engineering students the opportunity to explore a variety of specialist skills and occupations, gain practical insight into different career paths, and begin to stamp their own identity on the sector.

Students will be able to get hands on with activities, challenges, and workshops exploring a number of engineering areas. Women engineers and Teesside University engineering students will also be in attendance to share stories about their work and careers, and answer questions.

Away from the work sessions, there’ll be social activities where students can meet and get to know each other, including crazy golf, go-karting, and bowling. Around campus there’ll also be quizzes, karaoke, and more – including plenty of space and time to unwind.

Discovering engineering

International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) is all about celebrating the work and achievements of women in engineering. The story of its founders, the Women’s Engineering Society, stretches all the way back to 1919, when female engineers found themselves out of work at the end of the First World War.

This year’s theme is #EngineeringIntelligence, which keeps the world moving through engineers’ experience and expertise. Women’s impact on the sector has never been stronger, but we still need to open the door wider and keep creating opportunities for supporting women who can thrive and feel like they belong, on their way to a career in engineering.

In January we launched The Steph McGovern Women in Engineering Scholarship powered by Enginuity, offering financial support and mentoring to first-year female scholarship recipients at Teesside University. The scholarship was created to help address the under-representation of women in engineering, widen access to higher education, and create more visible opportunities for talented young women who may not otherwise have considered this route.

The Women in Engineering Residential builds on that ambition – to create a pipeline of interest and aspiration at an earlier stage by giving young women the chance to experience engineering in a practical, engaging, and confidence-building way, before they make decisions about their future study and career plans.

There are limited day places available on the WiER – so act fast to secure your place.
