HMRC held a consultation in 2022 on six areas relating to employment data where the data HMRC collects and uses could be improved.

Enginuity provided a submission noting that:

  • Collecting data on the occupation of each employee, in the most granular available SOC codes by the most granular SIC codes, would be incredibly useful to us, especially knowing what industries and locations specific SOC code occupations work in,
  • By cross-referencing this information to Department for Education data sets on people in education, we could create links between employment and education and identify the location of skills gaps in Engineering and Manufacturing across the UK, and
  • It is equally important to collect information on where people live to support the achievement of net zero goals.

HMRC published the outcome of the consultation in April 2023 deciding not to take forward the proposed changes for improving occupation and location data.
